Dutch GP 2025: Piastri wins as Norris's McLaren stops late

Oscar Piastri won the Dutch GP from pole at Zandvoort after Lando Norris stopped from second on lap 65. He now leads his McLaren team-mate by 34 points.

Oscar Piastri won the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort from pole position, 1.271 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, after his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris pulled off with smoke in the cockpit on lap 65 of 72. Norris had been second since lap 9. Isack Hadjar took third for Racing Bulls, the first podium of his Formula 1 career, in a race with three safety car periods.

How Piastri won at Zandvoort

Saturday had already split the McLarens by almost nothing: Piastri took pole by 0.012 seconds, with Verstappen third and Hadjar a season-best fourth. At the start Verstappen, the only driver in the top ten on soft tyres, went round the outside of Norris for second. Norris needed until lap 9 to take the place back, around the outside of Turn 1.

After that the McLarens ran about three seconds apart. Lewis Hamilton lost the rear of his Ferrari on the Turn 3 banking on lap 23 and hit the wall, and most of the field switched to hard tyres under the safety car, McLaren stacking both cars. A virtual safety car followed when Carlos Sainz and Liam Lawson touched at Turn 1. The second full safety car came when Kimi Antonelli dived down the inside of Charles Leclerc at Turn 3, just after the Ferrari's pit stop, and put him into the barrier. Antonelli was given a 10-second penalty.

Norris got within a second of his team-mate after that restart, but no closer. On lap 65 he reported smoke and stopped. Piastri handled one more restart, kept Verstappen and his softer tyres behind and won by just over a second. George Russell was fourth despite floor damage from an earlier clash with Leclerc, with Alex Albon fifth for Williams.

The teammate duels at Zandvoort

McLaren. Norris lost this race to his car rather than to his team-mate, but the count has no column for bad luck. Piastri won qualifying and was ahead when Norris stopped, so F1 Duels gives him both, and their head-to-head now stands 8–7 to Piastri in qualifying and in races.

Racing Bulls. Hadjar qualified fourth to Lawson's eighth, then drove a quiet, clean race to the podium. Lawson's afternoon went wrong at Turn 1: the contact with Sainz gave both cars punctures, Sainz took a 10-second penalty, and they finished 12th and 13th. Hadjar vs Lawson is 10–3 in qualifying and 7–3 in races.

Aston Martin. Lance Stroll crashed in Q1, started 19th and finished seventh, one place ahead of Fernando Alonso, who had started tenth. It is only Stroll's third race win over Alonso this year in our count, and on Saturdays the duel is still 14–0 to Alonso.

Haas. Oliver Bearman started from the pit lane after power unit changes and came through to sixth. Esteban Ocon, who had out-qualified him, was tenth. That makes the Haas duel 8–7 to Ocon in qualifying and 7–5 in races.

Ferrari's duel produced no verdict, with both cars in the wall at Turn 3. At Mercedes, Antonelli finished 16th and Russell is now 11–0 up in races.

What it means for the title

Piastri's seventh win of the season took his lead over Norris from nine points to 34, at 309 to 275. Verstappen is third on 205, and nine rounds remain. Every verdict from the weekend is on the Dutch GP duels page.
