Austrian GP 2026: Russell beats Verstappen by 1.6s from pole

Russell won the Austrian GP from pole, 1.6s clear of Verstappen after a duel settled at the second stops. He beat Antonelli twice and trails him by 40.

George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix from pole position, finishing 1.611 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen at the Red Bull Ring. Kimi Antonelli was third, 0.375s behind the Red Bull, which put both Mercedes on the podium. It was Russell's second win of 2026, his first since the Melbourne opener, and his second in Austria after 2024.

How Russell held off Verstappen

Russell got away cleanly and led into Turn 1. Behind him the order shuffled fast: Lewis Hamilton went past Charles Leclerc for second, Antonelli ran wide on the opening lap and fell to fourth, and Verstappen worked his way forward from fifth. He first attacked Hamilton at Turn 3 on lap 11, but the Ferrari held him off until lap 22, when the Red Bull made the same move stick.

The first round of stops changed nothing at the front. Red Bull pitted Verstappen on lap 19 and Mercedes answered with Russell a lap later. Verstappen then closed to under two seconds, so the race came down to the second stops. Mercedes brought Russell in for hards on lap 44, while Red Bull left Verstappen out for several more laps. He rejoined around ten seconds behind, took time out of the leader lap after lap and ran out of race 1.6s short. "Incredible to be back on the top step," Russell said.

Antonelli's afternoon turned on timing. He had just pitted when Carlos Sainz stopped his Williams on the main straight with a suspected electrical fault, bringing out a virtual safety car, so he missed the cheaper stop and had to pass Leclerc again on track. A long final stint brought him to within half a second of Verstappen on the last lap.

Cadillac lost both cars in the first five laps, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez each stopping with brake problems. Lance Stroll retired his Aston Martin with a suspected ERS issue, and Fernando Alonso took a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane on his way to 18th.

Russell vs Antonelli and the other teammate duels

Mercedes. Russell owned this weekend from Saturday. He took pole while Antonelli lined up fourth, then beat him again on Sunday. That levels their 2026 qualifying count at 4–4, and their head-to-head in races is now 4–3 to Antonelli in our count. The championship leader still has the edge in the garage, but only just.

Ferrari. Leclerc out-qualified Hamilton by 0.089% of the lap for a front-row start, then had the worse race. Hamilton passed him at the start, made three stops while fighting for rear grip, and still finished fifth. Leclerc faded through the second half and came home eighth, passed by Antonelli, Oscar Piastri, Isack Hadjar and Lando Norris. On F1 Duels, Hamilton leads Leclerc 5–2 in races this year, while Leclerc is 5–3 up in qualifying.

McLaren. Norris beat Piastri in qualifying by 0.014%, sixth against seventh, about as close as a duel gets. Sunday went the other way. Piastri passed Leclerc for fourth, with light contact, while Norris was asked to extend a stint, told the team he had no pace left and dropped behind his teammate when he finally pitted. Piastri finished almost ten seconds clear. Their 2026 count is level in both columns, 4–4 and 2–2.

Red Bull. Hadjar had a tidy afternoon, sixth from eighth on the grid, and still finished nearly 28 seconds behind Verstappen. He has yet to beat his teammate in a counted race this season: 0–4 on our tally.

Further back, Liam Lawson led Arvid Lindblad home in ninth and tenth for Racing Bulls, and Gabriel Bortoleto beat Nico Hülkenberg in both sessions at Audi, finishing 11th.

What it means for the championship

Antonelli still leads the drivers' standings, now by 40 points. Russell moves back up to second, six points ahead of Hamilton, who drops to third. The title fight is also a teammate duel, and Austria went to Russell on both days. All the head-to-heads from this race are on our Austrian GP duels page.
