Miami GP 2025: Piastri beats Norris for a third win in a row

Oscar Piastri won the Miami GP by 4.6s from Lando Norris after passing pole-sitter Verstappen. His lead over his McLaren team-mate grows to 16 points.

Oscar Piastri won the Miami Grand Prix from fourth on the grid, 4.630 seconds ahead of his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris. It was his third Grand Prix win in a row and his fourth of the season. George Russell was a distant third for Mercedes, 37.644 seconds back, with pole-sitter Max Verstappen fourth. From lap 18 at the Miami International Autodrome, the two orange cars ran first and second and nobody else was in their race.

How Piastri won in Miami

Verstappen had taken pole by 0.065 seconds from Norris, with Kimi Antonelli third and Piastri only fourth. At the start Verstappen locked up into Turn 1, Norris tried the outside, and after contact the McLaren ran wide at Turn 2 and fell to sixth. Norris said Verstappen had “forced me off”; the stewards took no action. Behind them Jack Doohan's Alpine stopped with a puncture after contact with Liam Lawson, bringing out the first of three virtual safety cars.

Piastri passed Antonelli for second at the restart and then sat behind the Red Bull for ten laps. On lap 14 Verstappen out-braked himself into Turn 1, ran wide, and Piastri was through. Norris needed longer: on lap 18 he pushed Verstappen wide at Turn 11, gave the place back, and retook it later on the same lap. By then Piastri was more than eight seconds up the road.

Oliver Bearman's Haas stopped with a mechanical problem on lap 29, and McLaren stacked both cars under the virtual safety car without losing a place. Russell, who had started on hard tyres, also stopped and came out ahead of Verstappen. An engine failure on Gabriel Bortoleto's Sauber caused the third neutralisation. Norris cut the gap to just over four seconds late on, partly through traffic, but never got close enough to attack.

The teammate duels in Miami

McLaren. Norris won Saturday's battle and lost Sunday's at Turn 1. Starting two places ahead of your team-mate counts for little when the first lap undoes it, and Piastri did the rest with a clean pass on Verstappen four laps before Norris managed his. On F1 Duels, their head-to-head now reads 4–2 to Norris in qualifying and 4–2 to Piastri in races.

Mercedes. Antonelli took sprint pole and started the Grand Prix third, two places ahead of Russell, yet finished sixth. His pit stop was slowed when he had to wait for Carlos Sainz in the pit lane, and Alex Albon later passed him for fifth. Russell, on the other strategy, took the podium. In our count Russell leads Antonelli 5–1 in races this season.

Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton went out in Q2 and started 12th, four places behind Charles Leclerc. On mediums against Leclerc's hards he caught his team-mate, and after a long exchange on the radio Ferrari let him past to chase Antonelli. He could not close in, and in the final laps the team swapped the cars back. Sainz then lunged at Hamilton on the last lap and made contact, but Hamilton kept eighth. Leclerc's race win makes the Ferrari duel 5–0 in races.

Williams. Albon finished fifth after passing Sainz on lap 18 and Antonelli on lap 31. Sainz was ninth and was called to the stewards over the final-lap contact with Hamilton. Albon vs Sainz is 3–1 in races on F1 Duels.
